After escaping from an abusive relationship in 2018, Michela Serrano moved with her two children — then 5 and 7— from California to Rhode Island.
Why Rhode Island? “The word hope was literally written on the flag,” said Michela, “It seemed like the perfect place to begin again.”
She did what so many victims dream of doing: she found the courage to leave. But what came next was harder than anyone could have warned her about. With two young kids, finding shelter was both difficult and frightening.
