In a 45-minute session, Elisha Smith Arrillaga, Ph.D., vice president of Research at CEP, and CEP President Phil Buchanan will be joined by Tony Richardson, president of The George Gund Foundation and CEP's Board Chair, to discuss the implications of just-collected CEP data for funders' evolving responses to the ongoing challenges facing the nonprofit sector. This webinar is based on the book, “Building Exceptional Relationships with Family Friends and Colleagues, which is in turn based on a course taught by Carole Robin, Ph.D. at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. The course, Interpersonal Dynamics, affectionately called “Touchy Feely” by students, was the most popular and oversubscribed to elective course. For many decades, students described the course as transformative and often say it alone was worth the price of tuition. The premise of the course and the book is that being interpersonally competent is a determinant of both professional and personal success.

During the webinar, we will explore how to move a relationship along a continuum from dysfunctional, or in which there is contact but no connection, to one that is at a minimum robust and functional, as well as what it takes to move a relationship even farther down the continuum to exceptional. We’ll talk about the role of appropriate disclosure and vulnerability, the importance of stretching outside our comfort zones, inviting disclosure, developing empathy, giving feedback in service of building stronger relationships, and dealing with conflict productively.  

Learning Objectives:

• Learn how to make relationships more functional and robust
• Understand the role of disclosure and empathy in building relationships
• Learn about the importance of expressing feelings (in addition to thoughts) in building stronger relationships

Securing funding through grants can be a vital part of sustaining your nonprofit’s programs and services. This four-session training course led by Sarah DeCataldo of Charis, LLC is designed to help you understand the fundamentals of grant writing and equip you with the skills to craft compelling proposals. We will cover key aspects from introducing your organizations to funders to preparing for submission.
